Sponsor a Child Malawi Determined to Develop

Missing out on an education prevents a child from reaching his or her full potential. By sponsoring a student through their education, for as little as $50 per month, you can help them overcome this hurdle and give them a chance at a better, more prosperous future.

When joining D2D’s Youth Sponsorship Program, you create a personal connection with your sponsored child. First, you will receive a Welcome Pack, providing you with information on the Malawian education system, and your new sponsored youth. Following this you will receive reports of your child’s progress and letters from them three times a year: at Easter, August and Christmas. You are even able to hold face-to-face Skype calls with your sponsored student if you wish, during their school holidays.

Each sponsor invests in a one-quarter sponsorship. Therefore each student is linked with four families. This approach ensures a continuity of sponsorship and acts as a safeguard if a sponsor is unable to continue donating to the program. It also makes sure the sponsored amount is able to cover the full cost of our students while not overburdening any individual donor.

Our Youth Sponsorship Program does not simply cover a student’s school fees. All funds are used collectively to cover the true costs associated with making sure all of our youth receive everything required to succeed at school; from school tuition to uniforms and other school supplies. However, we also recognize that providing school fees and supplies is not always enough to allow a child to receive an education. Some youth may be orphaned, or from other vulnerable backgrounds whereby they must work to support themselves and their families. To meet the needs of these most vulnerable youth we run a live-in home, providing them with a safe place to live and focus on their education. The program also takes care of the upkeep of our live-in students, which provides these youth with food, clothing, soap, toothbrushes, and everything else required in caring for and raising young people. As such, when sponsoring a student your donation will be used to support that child throughout school, as well as our other youth, who do not have their own sponsors. As an organization based in the village in which we work, we want to ensure that we care for as many disadvantaged children as possible.

The Youth Sponsorship program is complemented by a range of other projects that D2D facilitates. These projects ensure that our youth are not just supported at school, but also receive a non-formal education to increase their confidence and self-esteem; learn about important and relevant youth issues; and encourage positive personal development. This all-encompassing approach encourages students to stay in school by emphasizing the importance of education and highlighting the challenges that young people in Malawi face; such as early marriage, pregnancy and family obligations, and how to tackle these issues. These challenges are all symptomatic of poverty and common throughout Malawi; particularly in rural areas.

Being based directly in the village where we work, all of our work is carried out collaboratively with the local community. We have close links with the local secondary school, where many of our sponsored youth learn, and we run projects to develop the school and increase the overall standard of education, not only for our youth, but for all students attending the school.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How does it work?

Once you sign up to our sponsorship program you will be linked to a specific child and given the opportunity to communicate with him or her. Your communication and dedication to a child can provide them with inspiration and motivation to work hard and do well in school. We also have a large number of youth that come to our door seeking assistance with their school tuition. In order to meet their immediate need, and ensure as many children as possible from our local area can attend secondary school, as well as to comply with non-profit laws, your sponsorship will also contribute to youth who are paid for by Determined to Develop but do not have a sponsor. Your entire donation will remain restricted to the Youth Sponsorship Program.

How much does it cost?

The cost to sponsor a student is $50US a month (or $600US a year) and is used for the student’s school tuition fees, learning materials, uniforms, shoes, food and medical expenses

Why should I choose to sponsor a child through Determined to Develop?

At Determined to Develop we have strong relationships with our sponsored youth as they are all from our local community- we personally know every child whose fees are paid by your sponsorship and we closely monitor their progress at school to ensure they are achieving good grades. However we also recognize that simply paying for school fees is not always enough to keep students in school, and therefore have established a live-in home where the most vulnerable youth in our community live. Additionally, our Youth Sponsorship Program is also complemented with our wider youth support programs, where we provide non-formal education, developing the students’ confidence and raising their awareness of relevant youth issues and the importance of school.

How long will my sponsorship last?

Your sponsorship can last for as long as you like. We are committed to providing continual support to all of our youth throughout their education. There are four years of secondary school, though it is typical for a student to take six years to complete, depending on the quality of the primary education they have received. It is normal for a student to repeat the third and fourth years of secondary school and rewrite national examinations. However, we recognize that our sponsors cannot always commit for such long periods of time. It is for this reason that we have chosen a model whereby one child is linked to four sponsors.

Can I send gifts to the child that I sponsor?

We discourage sponsors from sending gifts such as textbooks, pens and school uniforms, and other educational materials as the sponsorship covers these materials and are relatively cheap to purchase in-country. Purchasing these materials in-country also supports the local economy. If however a sponsor has a special gift they would like to send, this may be arranged with D2D.

Can I sponsor a child as a gift on behalf of another person?

Yes, absolutely! If you would like to sponsor a child on behalf of somebody else, we simply ask that we provide an email address for the gift recipient. We will send you an email receipt for your donation and the gift recipient will receive the Welcome Pack and all subsequent correspondence, about the sponsored youth.
