Missing out on an education prevents a child from reaching his or her full potential. By sponsoring a student through their education, for as little as $50 per month, you can give a young person from Malawi a chance at a better, more prosperous future.
When joining D2D’s Youth Sponsorship Program, you create a personal connection with your sponsored youth. First, you will receive a Welcome Pack, providing you with information on the Malawian education system and your sponsored youth. Following this, you will receive reports of the child’s progress and letters three times a year: at Easter, in August during the summer school break, and at Christmas. You are even able to hold face-to-face Skype calls with your sponsored student during their school holidays, if you wish.
Each sponsor invests in a one-quarter sponsorship. This means that each student is linked with four families. This approach ensures a continuity of sponsorship and acts as a safeguard if a sponsor is unable to continue donating to the program. It also makes sure the sponsored amount is able to cover the full cost of education support for the student, without overburdening any individual donor. Our Youth Sponsorship Program does not simply cover a student’s school fees. All funds are used collectively to cover the true costs associated with making sure all sponsored youth receive everything required to succeed at school. This includes school tuition, uniforms, pencils, shoes, medical expenses, and exam fees.
As an organization based in the village in which we work, we want to ensure that we care for as many disadvantaged children as possible in a fair and equitable way. We recognize that providing school fees and supplies is not always enough to allow a child to receive an education. Some youth may be orphaned, or from other vulnerable backgrounds whereby they must work to support themselves and their families. To meet the needs of these most vulnerable youths, we run a live-in home through our Residential Youth Program, providing a safe place for students to live and focus on their education. The residential youth are provided with food, clothing, soap, toothbrushes, and everything else required in caring for and raising young people. As such, when sponsoring a student, your donation will also be used to support these residential youths, as well as other youth from the community who are still waiting for sponsors of their own.
The Youth Sponsorship program is complemented by a range of other projects that D2D facilitates. These projects ensure that our sponsored students are not just supported at school, but also receive a non-formal education which increase their leadership skills, self-esteem, teach them about important issues, and encourage positive personal development. This all-encompassing approach encourages students to stay in school by emphasizing the importance of education and addresses the challenges many of them may be facing as youth in Malawi. These non-formal initiatives include weekly Girls Club meetings, annual leadership workshops, and a female empowerment program.
Being based directly in the village where we work, D2D is able to better oversee the academic and personal development of all sponsored youth. We have close links with the local secondary schools, where our sponsored youth learn, including the teachers and school administrators. D2D maintains support to the local education institutions, through infrastructure improvements, supplying of materials, and teachers trainings, to improve the educational standard for the sponsored youth under D2D programming and for all students attending these schools.
