Congratulations to Our New Sponsored Form One Girls!

Determined to Develop is excited to offer new sponsorships to six Girls Club members as they begin their secondary educations. The girls each passed their standard eight examinations (8th grade) and have begun form one (9th grade) at their respective secondary schools. They will continue participating in the Girls Club secondary group, which will bolster their educational success through fostering self-confidence, healthy behaviors, leadership skills, and goal-setting.

D2D’s sponsorship program offers financial support for school and exam fees as well as career mentorship to secondary students who face barriers to completing their education and exhibit a strong work ethic. Sponsorship is essential to female students in particular, as boys’ education is often prioritized. Additionally, female students face numerous barriers to their educational success, including the pressures of early marriage and pregnancy. D2D has selected the six new members for the sponsorship program based on their financial circumstances and academic achievements.

Especially noteworthy is Selah, who was accepted into St Mary’s Girls Secondary School in Zomba, Malawi. Since its opening in 1939, St Mary’s has consistently been among the top-performing schools in Malawi. Qualifying for enrolment at St Mary’s is highly competitive, and a testament to Selah’s hard work and commitment to her studies.

Selah’s parents divorced when she was a baby, leaving her mother to care for Selah and her three older sisters on her own. When Selah was six, she moved in with her aunt to ease her mother’s financial burden. Selah’s aunt, a teacher at Hara Primary, struggles to manage Selah’s school fees, upkeep, and school supplies on her own. Because of her financial situation and Selah’s outstanding school performance, Selah was accepted into the sponsorship program after completing standard eight. In her free time, Selah enjoys reading novels, swimming, and playing games with her friends in the village and at Girls Club. She wants to be a bank manager when she finishes her education.

D2D is proud to sponsor determined students like Selah, who are the future leaders and change-agents of their communities!
