D2D sponsored youth celebrate their holiday break in Malawi

We have officially wrapped up 2017 here at the Maji Zuwa/D2D campus! Over the holiday break, the boarding youth were back on campus, granting the opportunity for everyone to spend time together and celebrate the holiday season with one another. A favorite night for all was getting to visit Hakuana Matata, a nearby beach lodge, to play on the beach and have a pre-Christmas meal of blue nsima and chicken. On Christmas, the youth started their day by attending church and returned afterwards to partake in a celebration accompanied by new friends and old, music, and a lot of dancing. The sponsored youth were able to enjoy a special meal of goat and soda and spent time playing soccer in their Santa hats. It was a very Merry Christmas for all who were here!

Following Christmas day, one of the most enjoyable happenings for the sponsored boys and girls was getting to read letters from each of their sponsors in reply to the ones they had written to them when break initially started. Many of them also had the privilege to have a Skype call with their sponsors, sharing a special face to face interaction about all that is happening in each of their lives and at school here in Malawi.

Soon after, it was time to bring in the New Year! On New Year’s Eve, all the tables were cleared from the dining area which became the dance floor for the night. Some of the boys played DJ for the event, while others cooked chicken and chambo fish over the charcoal grill for everyone. Twenty minutes until the new year, countdown announcements begun, causing the excitement and energy to continuously rise as it neared closer. Only ten seconds out and everyone joined in the count. When midnight arrived, the campus exploded with cheerful celebration and whole lot of dancing. 2018 had officially arrived!

The new year has been off to a wonderful start, and busy too! On Sunday, all of the boarding youth made the journey back to each of their schools, starting the first day of classes in Term 2 at the start of the week. Girl’s Club is also officially back in session, with the first session of 2018 taking place this past Saturday for the secondary school sponsored youth. Since Term 2 was only days away at that point, the session focused on the importance of education for all females and emphasized what the power of having an education can do for each of the girl’s lives. D2D staff is extremely excited to be back working hard and is ready to take on a new year!
